Bay Area Drama Company presents “Bhopal”- a play in English. Penned by Rahul Varma, it brings to life the human stories within the complex political and economic milieu that created the worst industrial disaster the world has ever known. “Bhopal” has been translated into Hindi by the legendary Habib Tanveer and has been performed all over the world, including the famed Prithvi theatre in Mumbai.
This extraordinary play premieres on the 30th anniversary of the tragedy- December 3rd- at Sunnyvale Theatre with additional performances on Dec. 13th and 14th at Lohman Theatre, Foothill College.
The Bhopal disaster claimed over 25,000 lives and currently affects nearly 500,000 people with neurological and respiratory sickness, birth defects, disability and malformation among children. This intense and poignant play is a reminder that the frequency of industrial disasters is on the rise all over the world.
When asked why she chose to play the role of Dr. Sonya Lebonte, actress and producer Sindu Singh said, “I chose to do this role because to me, Dr. Sonya Lebonte represents that which is pure and good in all of us. She believes in her cause and fights for it with total sincerity and the utmost fervor and passion. She has given up a life of comfort and has chosen instead to work in the slums advocating against the powers-that-be for those who have no voice of their own, those who have been disenfranchised because of their poverty. I find myself simultaneously inspired by, and envious of, her single mindedness, her focus and her conviction. Sonya is who I want to be when I grow up.”
“Bhopal” is being co-sponsored by the Center for South Asia, Stanford University and Institute for South Asia Studies, UC Berkeley
